Imagine having an unlimited budget for home renovations, furnishings, art & decor - I’ll let you daydream for a minute…
Great, you’re back!
In reality, regardless of your means, the majority of people remodeling or furnishing their homes are working within the confines of an amount they’ve allocated for such. But don’t let that tarnish your dreams of a space you absolutely love - this my friends is a great opportunity.
One of my favorite aspects of designing spaces is working within a budget; when you have restraints your creativity is able to flourish. That is why I’ll be updating the DESIGN FILES blog with advice for budget-friendly home solutions and curated items from my go-to sources to help you achieve your desired aesthetic for less. Sunday afternoon while still digesting Easter brunch, I began skimming through the latest Restoration Hardware catalog which had me thinking…
““Who can afford this?!”
By no means am I a cheapskate, if anything I’m more of a champagne taste on a beer budget type of gal. That said, I appreciate the value of money and what goes into earning it, therefore I spend wisely. I live by the rule of thumb people often scoff at; cost per wear in regards to jewelry, shoes, etc.; in this case cost per use or CPU. Furniture is an investment and should be treated as such - start by deciphering which space to prioritize; where do you spend the most time day in and day out, what is it that just isn’t working within that space? Which elements of the room design would enhance your comfort and appreciation of your time spent there. This is where you begin to allocate funds.
Remember, only you know what you are comfortable spending, therefore when your designer asks you “what is your budget” and you respond “I don’t have a budget”, 1. you most likely do have a cap on what you’re willing to spend (assuming you’re not a billionaire) and 2. it’s a disservice to all when you portray an unlimited monetary means but can’t fathom spending $5,000 to reupholster a sofa.
